Computational geometry of shape perception - This project investigates whether a mathematical 3D shape descriptor predicts aspects of human object perception and recognition.
Scientific Question
Do we encode aspects of the intrinsic geometric structure of shape during 3D object perception?
Why This Matters?
This project helps us understand what aspects of shape matter most during visual perception and object recognition. Multiple studies and theories investigate how we might encode the shape of a 2D or 3D object. It is important for us to be able to represent an object’s shape because this might tell us valuable information about what it might be used for, how it is used, or what that object even is. If we took a water bottle and cut it in half, we still know it’s a water bottle. This ability to recognize objects even after such drastic changes means that there are aspects of the object’s overall shape we pay more attention to in order to recognize said object. Investigating the ways in which we understand our environment and the things around us only furthers our knowledge of visual perception and informs current and future technologies.
