High-Density Equity Coil - A Head Size-Adaptive Flexible Plate 108-Channel Receive-Only Coil for Improved Cortical Imaging in 3T MRI

Scientific Question

Can one coil provide an optimal signal-to-noise ratio for any head size or shape?

Why This Matters?

In most standard coils, people with small heads are disadvantaged because they do not optimally fill the coil. This can lead to lower quality images, which means smaller heads may not get the same level of care compared a larger head that better fits the coil. On the other extreme, a head that is too big may not even fit into the coil at all; in these cases, a larger coil is often used that contains less elements, yielding lower quality images. Our design solves this by breaking the coil down into movable, semi-flexible sections which can be adjusted to minimise the distance between the head and the elements, ensuring maximum coil performance for all.
